What other non-related bowel disease complications and what is the prevalence?

The researchers detected unrelated to bowel disease complications that may arise in case of intolerance to gluten, provided that the link is always understood.

It is, inter alia, nerve damage or neuropathy, infertility, arthritis, dermatitis herpetiformis, and certain types of cancers. About nerve damage, often the patient gluten intolerance mentioned phenomena numbness in his limbs, and even pain. Also, migraines are identified as well as seizures or other neurological disorders sometimes.

In the context of infertility, it seems that infertility is common in people intolerant to gluten. Frequent miscarriages observed. In other patients, inflammation of the joints causes pain that trigger arthritis. Among the complications unrelated to bowel disease identified, there is dermatitis herpetiformis is a skin condition characterized by itching, burning sensation and appearance of red blisters, especially on the elbows, knees and buttocks. It is associated with gluten intolerance in 15% to 25% of cases. A certain type of cancer has also been listed. According to the specialists, the disease is associated with an increased risk of intestinal lymphoma, cancer of the intestine, and other types of cancer, long-term.

The diagnosis of gluten intolerance is not very simple, the data related to the prevalence fluctuate wildly. Patient organizations and professionals in the field believe that the disease is more widespread than previously believed, and therefore, many people are infected without knowing it. This frequency depends not only on ethnicity, but also areas where patients originate. It was noted during studies on the subject in Australia, Europe, and among whites in North America, populations are most affected by the disease. Among the Caucasians, the prevalence varies between 1 in 100 and 1 patient sick for about 300. Against this disease is much less present in people of African or Asian origin. The health studies conducted in Canada indicate that 300,000 Canadians could also be suffering from gluten intolerance, and there are still many cases undetected.

We will discuss in the next article types of possible diagnoses and stages thereof.
