Crohn’s disease, what is it? – Part 1

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

It was long thought that stress could trigger seizures. However, studies to date tend to refute this hypothesis. This chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive system is named after the person who first described in 1932 the American surgeon Burril B. Crohn. It mainly by attacks of abdominal pain and diarrhea, which can last several weeks or months. Fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition can occur even if it is not supported correctly with treatments in support.

There are claimed some cases, non-gastrointestinal symptoms that affect the skin, joints and even the eyes. In many respects, it may be confused with another common inflammatory bowel disease: ulcerative colitis. Besides doctors use to distinguish different criteria. It is established that ulcerative colitis affects only a segment delimited rectum and colon. However, Crohn’s disease can affect other parts of the digestive tract: the mouth to the intestines, sometimes leaving healthy areas. In some cases it is impossible to distinguish them; we then speak of affection “indeterminate colitis.” The first patient with whom I discussed the subject tells me it is 20 cm from the tip of his intestine damaged and currently it is under treatment with PENTASA.

Although it is an inflammation of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, most often, Crohn’s disease moved to the junction of the small intestine and colon (large intestine). This treatment requires close monitoring against the possible side effects and their negative impact on the kidneys. There is a period during which this patient was put on steroids. She insists elsewhere; on the side effects of some treatments. She has experienced hair loss, nausea, but also prohibits exposure to the sun. She feels much better with its new “UMOREL” treatment that is alternated with infusion every 15 days. Be careful with some treatments she says because doctors often fear that the disease progresses in acute pancreatitis. Therefore, they are very cautious when proposing certain medical solutions. A phrase often returns, according to the patients interviewed in this respect: it is invisible! She puts on the nerves (by pain experienced). Most of these people claim that it is a real change of life socially. One of them told me that she is often prone to strokes, very great fatigue, stomach pain, spasms and also bouts of diarrhea besides joint pain. This is a very heavy burden according to its level of development disease. In terms of diet, the pain is such that people are afraid to eat. It is through knowledge of the disease that we manage to understand and make your own diet. Of course at first, there are basic prohibitions recommended by doctors. In the case of the patient, for example, the doctor had forbidden him the fruits and vegetables. Over time, she learned to identify foods that she could endure such as tomatoes, bananas and, depending on the period, peaches, oranges. While peas, beans did not pass at all she would say. In his case, it is a hereditary, his grandmother was reached. They cut him a part of the intestine at one to ask him a pocket time. The disease can progress in this case to a bowel cancer. This was not the case and she died of other causes.
