Actress, screenwriter and director of American Jordanian-Palestinian origin, Cherien Dabis back with a new film entitled “The Summer in May,” currently in theaters. In his first film “Amreeka” partly autobiographical, welcomed by the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2009, Cherien Dabis tells the story of an Arab woman on American soil confronted with racist eyes during the first Gulf War. For “The Summer in May,” she finds herself behind and in front of the camera to interpret the role of May, a U.S. thirties back in his native country of Jordan. She began this journey in hopes to convince his Christian family and especially his very conservative mother, the merits of his future marriage to a Muslim. The young woman torn between tradition and modernity, trying to break away from its past in order to live their own choices. A key theme that loan director Palestinian father and Jordanian mother, born in a small town in Nebraska, USA, in 1979.
