C’est en regardant une ancienne émission télé, présentée par l’Ivoirienne Isabelle Anoh. Je me suis alors dit qu’il serait intéressant de mettre la mode togolaise en avant, d’autant que j’avais la légitimité pour cela: J’ai été mannequin, monitrice et directrice d’agence, et je « coachais » bon nombre de mannequins. Le milieu m’était donc familier. J’ai rencontré le responsable de la chaine LCF (ndlr: La chaine du futur) qui a adhéré au concept, même si je n’étais pas journaliste de formation. L’émission est passée pendant 4 ans à LCF, et depuis 3 ans elle passe sur la télévision nationale togolaise TVT.

Quel est le concept et le format de votre émission?

C’est une émission de 26 minutes qui met en vitrine les créateurs d’inspiration africaine et caribéenne. Le concept est de valoriser le travail qui se fait en Afrique. La mode africaine est en pleine expansion, les stylistes se forment, il y a une grande avancée. Depuis que l’émission existe, elle a fait beaucoup de chemin. Elle a, avant tout, misé sur les stylistes en leur apportant de la visibilité. Ainsi, la mode togolaise et africaine est vue de par le monde.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas bien la mode togolaise, si vous deviez citer des créateurs togolais, lesquels citeriez-vous ?

Je commencerais par Bamondi, qui nous a quittés, il y a un an. Elle était la doyenne et c’est elle qui organisait la Biennale de la Mode Togolaise. Après elle, il y a Ayanik (ndlr: directrice et fondatrice de l’école EAMOD). Elle aussi a créé un évènement mode: Alokpa. Il y a également Chris de Mens, Desmod Design, Style César, Hughes, Credaniah…

Vous qui côtoyez les créateurs togolais depuis plus de 7 ans, est-ce qu’on peut définir une mode togolaise contemporaine aujourd’hui ?

Cela va être très difficile. Il n y a pas de mode togolaise à proprement parler qui véhicule la culture togolaise, à l’instar de pays comme le Ghana ou la Côte d’Ivoire.

A quoi cela est-il dû ?

Je ne sais pas. Je me pose et leur pose souvent la question. Il y a un peu de tout au Togo. Je ne dirai pas qu’on copie mais on aime ce qui vient de l’étranger. Je me bats depuis 7 ans pour qu’il y ait une spécificité togolaise liée à notre façon de nous habiller et à notre culture. Pour la petite histoire, il parait que le premier défilé qui s’est déroulé en Afrique, c’était à Lomé. Je pense qu’on nous colle trop souvent l’étiquette de nana benz, parce que le Togo a longtemps été la plaque tournante du commerce du pagne en Afrique.

En fait, au Togo, on s’est plus focalisé sur les matières premières que sur les créateurs contemporains…

En effet! Aujourd’hui encore, le fait que l’on ait vendu des pagnes dans la sous-région pendant des décennies, nous colle à la peau.

Vous qui êtes une amoureuse et une spécialiste de mode, quel regard portez-vous sur la mode internationale?

La mode internationale va très vite. A l’occasion des JTEX 2016, on a parlé de mode, de développement et technologies nouvelles, je pense qu’on est en plein dedans. Si un créateur dévoile sa collection lors d’un défilé, à la minute près, c’est lancé sur les réseaux sociaux et c’est tout le monde qui la voit. En Afrique, on fait du tradi-moderne c’est-à-dire que l’on adapte les styles extérieurs aux modèles purement africains.

Comment est-ce que vous pensez que la mode africaine va évoluer dans 10 ou 20 ans ?

Je pense qu’il y a une certaine émergence de l’Africanité. Même les Africains qui vivent en Europe, spécialement les femmes, veulent revendiquer leur africanité. Dans 10 ans, le phénomène va s’amplifier.

C’est ça! Dans tout ce que je porte, que ce soit en Afrique, en Amérique, je revendique mon africanité. Je porte toujours une touche qui rappelle que je suis Africaine. Je pense que tout le monde ira dans ce sens, au cours des 10 ou 20 ans à venir.
