Peter Lindbergh : Ce serait davantage la vision que je pourrais avoir des gens que j’ai photographiés. De mon travail, je n’ai pas de vraie vision. Je m’intéresse avant tout aux personnes qui posent pour moi. Je les aime beaucoup et n’ai qu’une envie: les rendre belles!

Peter Lindbergh : Comme une boutade ou une provocation même, je dis souvent que je suis photographe de mode… Un qualificatif que bon nombre renie pour se targuer d’être des artistes. Personnellement, je pense que la photo de mode est un véhicule fantastique pour exprimer ce que l’on a envie de dire.

Peter Lindbergh: Oui, bien entendu…  C’est d’ailleurs ce que j’ai toujours voulu être. Je fais de nombreuses expositions, des expérimentations aussi. Mais ce qualificatif-là, sincèrement je m’en fous car je ne me dis pas artiste le dimanche, n’ayant plus un rond en poche le lendemain matin. Bien-sûr, il y a cet autre débat: « les photographes sont-ils des artistes?« . Et à cela, je vous répondrai: « oui, comme d’autres à partir du moment où on peut qualifier leur travail d’intéressant« . Je ne vois pas pourquoi seraient autorisés à prétendre au titre d’artiste uniquement les peintres, musiciens et autres sculpteurs. Un peintre nul n’est pas un artiste à mes yeux. De même qu’un photographe qui n’a travaillé que pour des catalogues… Etre artiste, c’est un état d’esprit lié à une manière de travailler et d’avancer dans son travail.

Peter Lindbergh: L’image que j’ai de la femme sur papier glacé est horrible. Au fond, je ne sais pas qui decide réellement de l’image à donner de la femme, ni où est leur intérêt… si ce n’est pécuniaire. Et à ce titre, tout est aseptisé. Pas une trace de rides ou de vécu… Est-ce cela l’image de la femme que nous devons donner? Je ne le pense pas. Les femmes sont aujourd’hui coincées par des diktats, elles veulent paraitre jeunes à tout prix. Cela me désole car ce qui fait la beauté d’une femme, ce sont justement les empreintes laissées par le temps. Et à titre plus personnel, je pense que la femme est la plus belle des créations. Les femmes sont, selon moi, bien plus intéressantes que les hommes. Elles sont courageuses, fines, sensibles. Je les adore… D’ailleurs, il m’arrive quelques fois de penser que si j’avais été une femme, je serais lesbienne… (rires). Mais peut-être que si j’en avais été vraiment une, je ne penserais pas de la sorte!

Peter Lindbergh: Aujourd’hui je dirais que c’est la couleur qui a pris le dessus à 70%. C’est vrai que j’ai longtemps travaillé prioritairement le noir et blanc presque par tradition. Et puis il n’y a pas si longtemps encore, la couleur était bien moins intéressante qu’elle ne l’est aujourd’hui. Et avec le numérique, on shoote en couleurs.

Peter Lindbergh: Oui, absolument. Je travaille en noir en blanc, quand j’ai le choix parce que j’y suis meilleur. Mes photos ont plus de personnalité. J’aime la façon dont la lumière du noir et blanc sculpte les visages.
